5 Age Statement Whiskies To Look Out For

5 Age Statement Whiskies To Look Out For

No age statement whiskies have been on the rise over the past few years, and distilleries are furiously promoting them. "It's just as good," they say. "It's marketing," others argue. But for what is due to bad stock management and the very thirsty, I can't say we haven't had much luck with them. No age statements can be tasty, but for the nit-picker, it is always comforting to see the number of years on the label. Guilty? Look no further. Here are five newly released age statement whiskies to consider.

The Macallan Double Cask 12 Year Old

The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old

If you already have the Sherry Oak and Fine Oak 12 Years Old, your set is complete. The Double Cask, matured in American and European oak, is a beautiful balance of citrus, spicy aromas, and reminds you of sticky, bittersweet marmalade. It packs a different punch from the heavy Sherry and mellow Fine Oak, but makes the perfect everyday dram. $140 before taxes

Caol Ila 1980 35 Year Old & Rare

Caol Ila 1980 35 Year Old, Old & Rare

From the sleepy bay of Caol Ila (pronounced cull-eela) on Islay comes this tiny batch of 35 Year Old whisky from Hunter Laing's Old & Rare series. Expect sooty notes of peat, apple and the salty sea air. And as its name suggests, there are only 46 bottles around, so be prepared to pay its price. Approx $733

Balblair 21 Year Old

The MacPhail's Collection from Balblair Distillery, 21 Years Old

This is a small and exclusive range of fine single malts from distilleries all around Scotland. The range includes distilleries such as Glenrothes, Highland Park and Balblair, which hails from the Highland of Scotland. Pour yourself a glass of this neat. It's sweet and creamy, and be surprised by the undertones of banana, raspberry and honey. Approx $120

Tormore 1992 24 Year Old Signatory

Tormore 1992 24 Year Old, Cask Strength Collection

Aged in a bourbon barrel and bottled by the Signatory, this is something you will like if you're into whisky reminiscent of sweet and spicy with a rather dry finish. It may not be great as an everyday tipple, but possibly perfect to go along with long, slow puffs of the cigar. Approx $128.74

Kilkerran 12 Year Old

Kilkerran 12 Years Old

Complex yet light and fragrant, with a faint trace of licorice. Peated, but the smoke quietly lingers. Savoury, sweet and spicy, this is the perfect whisky if you want only just a hint of Islay in a drink. Approx $39.69
