Top 5 TV and film reboots you need to check out

  • MacGyver

Unorthodox problem solving skills, vast scientific knowledge and great hair. This re-imagination of Angus MacGyver will retain the essence of the character while incorporating touches from the present digital age such as smartphones and apps. Played by Lucas Till (think Havok from X-men:First Class) the series sees a young MacGyver as part of a covert organization within the US government. The series pilot aired last week and you might be thinking that the ingenuity of the original character will be lost in this updated version but rest assured the new MacGyver is still more brains than brawn like the original.

  • Baywatch

Let’s be honest, you probably only watched this show for the luscious babes in their red swimsuits but the upcoming film adaptation of the series is centred on the customary tale of rivals turned friends, banding together for the greater good. The cast includes Dwayne Johnson as iconic Mitch Buchannon, head lifeguard and Zac Efron as Matt Brody, the cocky new guy. In addition, the Hoff himself and Pamela Anderson will be making cameo appearances in the film so you know it’s going to be one hell of a party. The movie is slated for release in May 2017.

  • Star Trek

Over the last half-century there have been multiple remakes of this sci-fi classic and there’s yet another. The franchise has seen a resurgence with the recent film reboots but will be making its way back to the TV-verse. The new series, Star Trek: Discovery, is set to premier in May 2017 and will be available on Netflix. Trekkies can expect to set their phasers to ‘binge’ as the series will introduce a new ship and characters while staying true to the established canon of the Star Trek universe.

  • Lethal Weapon

Are you too old for this yet? The original franchise had us in its pockets with the beloved duo of Gibson and Glover who’s on screen chemistry bolstered the success of the movie but besides that it was just a downright good action movie which is what the TV series aims to duplicate. The series was aired recently, with the first episode chock full of adrenaline fuelled action but managed to stay light and comedic which shows a promising start to what could be the next great chapter in the wildly successful franchise.

  • Power Rangers

After the many reiterations of the series over the years, what started out as a kids TV show is now going to be a major motion picture. Scheduled for release in early 2017, director Dean Isrealite said the film will have a more “grounded nature” to keep it updated and realistic in this day and age. If you’re a true fan then there’s no need for convincing, it’s morphin’ time.
