Bowmore Introduces the Devil's Casks III

On the rugged island of Islay, legend has it that the devil once snuck into a church in Bowmore. The church, being circular, offered no corner for the devil to hide. As a result, he was seen, and an angry mob chased him down the village, right through the gates of the Bowmore Distillery. It was just when casks were being filled and getting loaded aboard a paddle steamer, the devil disappeared into thin air. As the story goes, he must have had escaped via a cask that was bound for the mainland.

It sure is some story, but something good did come out of it. It inspired the Bowmore Devil's Casks series, a small batch release. Closing the chapter comes number three, a combination of the first and second, where whisky matured in first fill sherry casks – Oloroso and Pedrox Ximenez – is brought together. Think rich, dark, exotic fruits and the earthy aroma of angelica root. Take a sip of the deep mahogany liquid and detect richness in the form of date oils, chocolate fudge and salted treacle. It's a whisky easy to enjoy neat, though adding a splash of water will always help open the flavours.

The Bowmore Devil's Cask III is available at The Oak Cellars and 1855 The Bottle Shop
