Give a man a drink, and he’ll drink for a night. Teach a man to mix a drink, and he’ll be pouring drinks for everyone all night. That’s the philosophy we swear by, and it seemed apt that our A-Listers should learn to concoct. So we invited BarSmiths, a local boutique mixologist outfit, to guide the 12 finalists on the techniques and tricks of making a good tropical cocktail using Chivas 12 Year Old whisky. And yes, there are more ways to drink Scotch than “straight up, on the rocks, with soda or some other mixer”.
The guys were split into groups of three, and each given 15 minutes to create a cocktail and mix 50 shots, which would then be served to the crowds at Tanjong Beach Club. This time around, we initiated a public voting challenge: the guests at Tanjong Beach Club would sample each drink and select their favourite and the winning team would receive a sweet prize from Chivas. Needless to say, this was a mad rush for votes.
First off, they had to create a cocktail that was not only palatable, but had to include one of these four ingredients: chilli, beetroot, gherkins and ginger. There was certainly a scramble for advice and aid from the BarSmiths when the guys were trying to sort out what ingredients would go well with these “A-List” ingredients.
